Subdownloader is an automatic subtitle downloader. It is available for multiple platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The source code is available for you to download and compile. The Windows version has a shareware license, which means that after 15 days of testing, you will have to buy a license to continue using it. The other versions are free.
When you launch the application you will see a directory tree on the left pane. You can simply navigate to a folder with a video file inside it and the app will automatically detect the presence of the video file and start an online search on Opensubtitles.org for matching subtitle files. Or, you can simply select the file that you want to find subtitles for. After a scan, the app will display the search results on the right pane. By default, it will show subtitles in any language. But you can narrow down the list if you select a language from the "Filter by" drop-down menu. There are two actions that you can carry out for each search result. You can either download the subtitle or play the video file with that subtitle. For this last feature, you have to specify a default player in the settings.
In my testing, I was able to find results, but whenever I tried to download a subtitle, I got an error saying that the app didn't have the necessary permissions to write on my disk. I ran the app in Administrator mode, and that didn't work either. more
